Conservation District of Iowa (CDI) and the Tama County Soil and Water Conservation District (Tama SWCD) are pleased to announce that Cole Moody has been selected to receive $600 as the Regional Winner of the Conservation Districts of Iowa Scholarship. In addition, he will also receive Tama SWCD’s local annual $300 scholarship.
Cole is a senior at Union High School in La Porte City and is the son of Ryan and Laura Moody of Dysart. He will graduate with a 4.0 GPA on May 22.
The CDI and Tama SWCD scholarships are awarded to students pursuing a college education in conservation and/or agriculture and who show leadership and scholastic achievement. Together, CDI and Iowa’s 100 Soil and Water Conservation Districts fund and implement the scholarship program as part of their mission to protect and enhance soil, water, and other natural resources valuable to our state.
Cole realized his passion for agriculture at an early age and pursued natural resource and agriculture coursework throughout high school. He has furthered this passion by serving in FFA chapter and regional leadership roles, by participating as an Iowa Youth Institute Borlaug Scholar and a Global Youth Institute Youth Scholar and by being involved with numerous community service opportunities.
Through his family’s experience with an international adoption, Cole gained an understanding of daily food insecurity and he became dedicated to discovering means of solving food security issues locally, nationally and worldwide. With his agricultural background, he realizes that food security, natural resource conservation and agricultural sustainability are intertwined.
Because of this, Cole has chosen to pursue his higher education at Iowa State University due to its reputation of being on the leading edge of new and innovative agricultural practices. He hopes to use the knowledge and training he gains to help sustainably bring food security to people around the world.
CDI and Tama SWCD wish Cole success in his future endeavors.
