AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) Oak 3 is helping staff at Scattergood Friends School and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the next eight weeks, May 5 - June 30. NCCC members are assisting Scattergood School staff with completing such tasks as maintenance and farm upkeep. Half of the team is working on building a firewall for the boy’s dorm lounge, and previously completed chopping firewood, cementing the garage floor and doing demolition work. The other half of the team is working on the farm, harvesting vegetables for the school kitchen, feeding and watering the livestock, weeding the vegetable fields. After working at the school for two weeks, Oak 3 will be transitioning to a new project at Coralville Lake working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers evaluating and repairing trails and removing invasive garlic mustard.
In addition, Oak 3 has volunteered outside of their projects at the Shellsburg Community parade, Paws and More, an animal shelter in Washington, Iowa. They are also planning on attending several Relay for Life’s in the upcoming weeks.
