Just a week after finding out about their Round 2 project, AmeriCorps NCCC team Oak 6 was diverted on a disaster relief project down in Chickasaw County, Mississippi. The group spent two weeks removing debris and trees from yards that had been affected by the tornadoes that blew through the region about two months ago. Oak 6 members enjoyed the opportunity to travel outside of their region and lend a hand to those whose lives were changed by the storms. After a brief transition period, the NCCC team took off to Escanaba, Michigan, their original destination.

Oak 6 has been in Escanaba, Michigan working for the Upper Peninsula State Fair Authority since June 8. The team is planning on renovating the fairgrounds by cleaning and painting the inside and outside of the buildings and doing whatever else is needed to prepare for the upcoming State Fair that is to take place in the middle of August. In addition, the team is doing trail maintenance in hopes to complete a trail that encircles the entire Upper Peninsula. Lastly, the team will help host the Futures Ladies Professional Golf Tournament at the end of the month. So far, Oak 6 has been busy preparing the Fair Ground buildings for painting.

It is important that AmeriCorps NCCC support and help the Upper Peninsula State Fair Authority because it is the only remaining state fair in the state of Michigan. In addition, the State Fair is independently funded and has been for the past two years. With the help of Oak 6, the Upper Peninsula State Fair Authority will be able to give their Fair Grounds a facelift that should last for decades to come.
