The National Foundation for Women Legislators and the National Rifle Association co-sponsor an academic scholarship contest for young women who are high school juniors and seniors. Winners receive a $3,000 college scholarship award and are given the opportunity to attend NFWL’s Annual Conference (all expenses paid). At the Conference, the scholarship recipients have the opportunity to learn about public policy, receive leadership training, and network with lawmakers from all 50 states. Several winners said their experience through the program strengthened their passion for public service. It is important to note that in order to enter the contest all applicants must be sponsored by a woman legislator from their respective state. In exchange for your participation, sponsoring legislators of the scholarship award winners will receive a full travel scholarship to attend NFWL’s 2012 Annual Conference November 15th – 19th at The Ritz-Carlton in Atlanta, Georgia.

This year’s essay topic is entitled ““The Constitution and States Rights: How Federalism Impacts Women and Historically Underrepresented Populations.” For this essay, applicants are asked to describe how various public policies impact women and underrepresented populations when decided at the state or federal level. Students will be asked to apply their knowledge of the U.S. Bill of Rights to shape their opinions about the role states ought to play in public policy decisions. Essays must be received or postmarked no later than Tuesday, July 31th, 2012.

NFWL and the NRA are proud to co-sponsor this annual essay contest in order to enable young women to attend college and advance women’s leadership.
