This is another in the series featuring the AmeriCorps members serving their country this year from the Vinton NCCC campus.

Name: Kate Thourot

Hometown: Ridgeville Corners, Ohio

Kate is serving a term with AmeriCorps NCCC at the Vinton Campus as a member of Oak 4. Kate is a dedicated individual who has a variety of experiences working with diverse populations. In college, she was a member of an organization known as The Common Good. Through this organization she was given the opportunity to visit the Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York. Many of these men had been in prison for more than half of their lives. Kate learned the value of empathy as well as the desire to do more service.

Kate graduated from Archbold High School in 2005 and Bowling Green State University in 2009 with a Bachelor’s in Social Work. After graduating, Kate went through the licensing process to become a Licensed Social Worker. She went on to co-facilitate an education and counseling group for teens through the Henry County Family Court. Kate also worked with victims of domestic violence at The House of Ruth as well as volunteering at The Center for Child and Family Advocacy. Kate also attempted to become a radio DJ.

Kate and her team are currently serving in Milwaukee with Groundwork Milwaukee and the Parks and Recreation Department. They are tasked with closing and building new bike trails.
