There is a new Vinton organization dedicated to supporting area veterans as well as the community.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Smith-Geater Post 8884 now has its own Auxiliary.
The charter was instituted April 22, 2012. Fourteen Department officers attended the event in Vinton.
The 23 charter members of the Post 8884 Auxiliary are: Denise Arras, Pamela K. Bush, Carol J. Geiger, Janet Goodell, Joan M. Hilligas, Jeanette Henry, Shirley Henry, Shelly Hopper, Victoria Hopper, Jennifer Kirkpatrick, Annette Koons, Renee Krause, Marcia Lerch, Roberta McElhaney, Donna Roepke, Lucia Sanchez, Pamela Sanchez, Jolene Schuelka, Janey Seely, Sharon Tuttle, Elaine Wheelock and Heidi Whelan.
Officers include: President Jeanette Henry, Senior Vice President Renee Krause, Jr. Vice President Jolene Schuelka, Treasurer Shirley Henry, Secretary Margaret Krug, Guard Barbara Henry, Historian and Chaplain Heidi Whelan, Conductress Donna Roepke, and Trustees Donna Roepke (1 year) and Barbara Henry (2 years).
The group will meet most months on the second Sunday of the month, at the ICAS Building (the former West school). The May meeting, however, will take place on the third Sunday, May 20, because May 13 is Mother's Day.
They finished their first meeting by enjoying refreshments made by VFW member Dale Henry, and a celebratory cake.
The group's motto is "We honor the dead by helping the living."
