AmeriCorps NCCC’s Oak 2 worked with the Lutheran Disaster Response in Minot, N.D. They were helping to restore homes that were effected in the Mouse River flooding last summer. Minot has had NCCC teams present since the flood happened in June of 2011. Many of the homes in the area had been mucked and gutted before the arrival of Oak 2.
Oak 2 was left with the final task necessary before houses would be ready for rebuilding which included power washing and sanitize in order to prevent the regrowth of mold. Since July 16, Oak 2 completed work on fourteen homes, aside from clearing debris from yards and delivering lumber shipments to homeowners ready to rebuild.
The Lutheran Disaster Response began in 1972 after significant flooding occurred in in eastern Pennsylvania. Helping with the Mouse River flood in Minot, N.D. the Lutheran Disaster Response has paired up with Hope Village. It is a unified volunteer center providing approximately 3.2 million dollars’ worth of volunteer labor to the flood recovery in Minot in the summer of 2012, it was created to increase the number of volunteers and enhance their effectiveness.
During Oak 2’s stay in Minot, they were lucky enough to get the chance to travel up to the International Peace Garden on the Canadian border. Here they spent some time beautifying the campus grounds of the International Music Camp and stayed over in the camp’s cabins. The next stop for Oak 2 is going to Oscoda, Michigan where they will be working with a YMCA Camp.
