By Jerome Frey NCCC team Cedar 4 is working with the city of Sioux Falls, SD. During this project the team had the opportunity to work with many organizations including, Habitat for Humanity, Ground Works, Eco-Camp, Downtown Sioux Falls and DakotAbilities. During their work with Habitat for Humanity the team scrapped and painted two houses. When working with Ground Works, Cedar Four making the public aware about throwing trash down the sewer through gluing down curb markers and hanging up informational door hangers throughout the city. Relying on our skills gained in Camp One Heartland the month before, Cedar Four was left in charge of creating and facilitating Eco-Camp the week after. The campers ranged from kindergarten through fifth grade. They were educated on the importance of recycling, the steps they can take to use less energy and how a community garden can be beneficial. The following week the team canvassed and updated the census of downtown Sioux Falls through the non-profit program Downtown Sioux Falls (DTSF). Cedar Four went throughout downtown knocking on every door and asking residents general questions about either their business or residential housing. This information collected helps DTSF know exactly what is going on in Sioux Falls and what needs improvement. Finally, Cedar Four is worked alongside DakotAbilities, a non-profit organization which helps people who are challenged with mental disabilities through providing housing and assisted living. The team is helping the up keep of a few homes with repainting the houses. Photo caption: NCCC Cedar 4 Team Leader Joe is educating the two campers on what vegetables are growing in the bin.
