As part of 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance the NCCC FEMA Corps team Hickory 3 spent two days in Oelwein, Iowa making improvements to town parks and infrastructure.

During this project the team worked with Oelwein’s Parks and Recreation Department to spread over 250 cubic yards of mulch onto playgrounds in the city’s renowned City Park. They also removed and then laid a new roof on a maintenance building at Wings Park. The team learned the basics in roofing while also gaining valuable insight on park maintenance and a history of Oelwein and their people.

Even though the team was only there for two days, everyone got a chance to understand the work ethic that drives the old railroad town of Oelwein. They had a positive experience and look forward to possible future opportunities in the Oelwein community. Hickory 3 is looking forward to building off their time in Oelwein and to continuing to serve their community and beyond.
