NCCC team, Cedar Four’s sixth and final project is working withThe Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Plymouth County Conservation Board in Westfield, Iowa. The Nature Conservancy is home to the Broken Kettle Grasslands, which is the largest prairie land in Iowa and is home to over 40 bison and a rare species of snakes. Plymouth County Conservation Board manages 2200 acres of parks and public recreational areas, including a hill used for snow tubing in the winter. Cedar 4 received in-depth chainsaw safety, use and maintenance training from the TNC. They are working to removing an old barbed-wire fence where deer would get trapped. Cedar 4 winds up old barbed wire and removes 8-foot wooden posts. The team is also cleared brush to help expand the bison pastures. Cedar 4 also worked with the Plymouth County Conservation Board on a warming hut that is used by visitors to keep warm while they wait their turn to go snow tubing at Hillview Park. The other half of the hut is used for storing the snow tubes during the off-season. The team alternates working with TNC and the Plymouth County Conservation Board each week. The team is glad to be working outside to help preserve Iowa’s natural beauty.
