Name: Sarah Dyer
Hometown: Elmhurst, Ill.
Sarah is serving as a member of the AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 4 at the Vinton Campus. She learned about NCCC from a coworker who served last year at the Sacramento campus. Sarah chose to join NCCC FEMA Corps because she is passionate about service and thought it sounded like an ideal opportunity to gain new experiences and step outside her comfort zone.
Sarah graduated from York Community School in 2008 and the University of Missouri in May 2012 where she majored in sociology and minored in business and women and gender studies. After her service term ends she plans to further her academic career by pursuing a master’s degree in social work.
Over the summer Sarah had the opportunity to teach English in South Korea through the University of Missouri. While there she worked with 8th grade and 6th grade students under the supervision of a Korean co-teacher and went on cultural excursions to the tea fields in Muan and the capitol city of Seoul. She says that this experience taught her a lot about Korean culture, teaching under difficult circumstances, and how to seize the opportunities that came her way. Sarah hopes to return to Asia to teach following graduate school.
