Et cetera : Kirkwood offers info Session to Make Smooth Transition from Military to College

Kirkwood Community College is hosting an information session specifically aimed to help military personnel and their family’s transition from the military to college life. This free event is on Tuesday, March 19, from 6-8 p.m., in 316 Iowa Hall, on Kirkwood’s main campus in Cedar Rapids. It’s the first time Kirkwood is holding a military-specific information session.

Those in attendance will be able to meet with Kirkwood’s Veterans Affairs Certifying Official Vicki Terronez, and gather information on the college’s more than 120 academic programs, various scholarships and the application process. Staff from the Cedar Rapids Vet Center will be available to answer questions regarding outreach programs. A Kirkwood financial aid representative will also be available to answer questions regarding the federal financial aid process.

Kirkwood has more than 700 student veterans and current military members and is perennially named a Military Friendly School by Magna Publications, G.I. Jobs Magazine.

“We do our best as a school to help student veteran’s transition to college,” said Terronez. “Leaving the service and coming to college can be a tough change. This session will help veterans and their family members navigate the enrollment process and paperwork associated with starting school. ”

The event is open to veterans, current military members, their spouses and family members. It is being presented as an informal drop-by information session, offering group and one-on-one instruction.
