Team Cedar 1 spent their first project working in Minot, North Dakota, cleaning up and repairing flooded houses while also helping others in the community. On weekends when they were not working on flood recovery tasks, they did several independent service projects (ISPs) around the city.
On one of their ISPs , NCCC members helped the local zoo open up for the first time since it was flooded. They helped haul lumber and chop up ice in a supply garage. Additionally, they organized tools and helped paint or stain several animal enclosures.
On another ISP project, Cedar 1’s volunteered twice at the Minot Humane Society, where they kept the residents of Kitty City company, spent some time walking dogs and cleaning kennels.
Earlier in the round, Cedar 1 traveled to the Minot State University for an ISP where they helped assist with Special Olympics state basketball tournament. Not only did they help prepare for serving snacks to the teams, they also cheered on the teams during several matches.
Ultimately, the AmeriCorps NCCC members serving in Minot were happy not only to have the chance to help the people of Minot impacted by flooding that occurred nearly two years ago, but also to help several local organizations.
