Maxine Dennis of Guinda, Calif., is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Spruce 3 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she wanted to gain some new life experiences before returning to college to complete her degree.

Maxine graduated from Esparto High School in 2008 and attended Olympic College before joining NCCC FEMA Corps. After her service term ends she hopes to build her resume by returning home to work with children before applying to the Camp Adventure program next year.

Travel is one of Maxine’s passions. She grew up in California and spent the past four years exploring Washington state. While living in Washington she volunteered at a local aquarium where she learned a lot about aquatic life and the local ecosystem.

Maxine and her team are currently serving on their final project in Portsmouth, New Hampshire after spending the last two rounds in New Jersey working on the Hurricane Sandy response with FEMA. They return to Vinton, Iowa in June for graduation.
