Sarah Kramer of Greenville, S.C., is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 4 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she plans to live a life of public service and believed that committing 10 months to service would be a great first step.
Sarah graduated from Wade Hampton High School in 2008 and the College of Charleston in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and historic preservation. After her service term ends she hopes to volunteer at a summer camp for kids with life threatening illnesses.
Sarah is a big fan of service. Prior to joining NCCC FEMA Corps she volunteered with a respite care program working with elders where she helped them with activities like crafts. She also volunteered with the Historic Charleston Foundation’s Spring Tour of Homes, a fundraising event where she gave house tours. She says, “Both of these examples of my volunteer work, while drastically different, truly reflect my interests. I minored in Historic Preservation in college so the Foundation’s work is, in my opinion, very important. Similarly, working with elders is something I genuinely enjoy doing.”
Sarah and her team wrapped up their final project in Kansas City, Mo. after spending the last two rounds in New Jersey working on the Hurricane Sandy response with FEMA. They returned to Vinton in June and graduate from the program on June 13.
