Jahbowha Newman, from Coushatta, La., is a member of Cedar 1 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start her 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Cedar 1 is made up of seven people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.
When asked why she joined NCCC, Jahbowha said it was “to be become a better person.” She added that she really wants to have a good time and work hard this year.
Jahbowha brings several skills with her to NCCC, which help her be successful throughout her term with the program. One of those skills is that she is very good with computers.
Prior to joining NCCC, Jahbowha had been getting her GED from Bossier Parish Community College. After finishing the program, she hopes to find a good job and go back to school.
Cedar 1 is currently working from July 17 to 31 with the City of Kimball in Kimball, Neb. The team is assisting with indoor and outdoor renovation projects to a newly acquired building that will serve as the first Visitor’s Center traveling east. Once complete, the facility will bring more traffic and commerce to counties within the Nebraska panhandle that was lowered due to closure of a visitor’s center in 2008.
