Maple 6, an AmeriCorps NCCC team based out of Vinton, Iowa, is serving as camp counselors at a special needs camp called Camp Albrecht Acres in Sherrill, Iowa from July 15 to August 2. The team of eight assists the campers in camp activities and personal daily routines.
The team members are excited to work with an organization that provides a unique environment for people with disabilities. NCCC members aid campers in their daily routines such as brushing teeth, changing clothes and feeding. Throughout the day, there are many activities that campers participate in with the help of the NCCC members such as fishing, arts and crafts, swimming, hiking, outdoor recreation and other fun and games. NCCC members also assist other counselors with meeting needs of the campers during the overnight hours. Camp Albrecht Acres receives campers of all ages as well as with various disabilities.
With the help of an AmeriCorps NCCC team, campers receive a fun filled week in which they are the center of attention and have an amazing time. The NCCC team has already been learning plenty about working with special needs population and is eager to learn a lot more!
