On Monday, Vinton will be seeing some new faces around town. Team Leaders will be flying and driving into the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School on July 22 to begin the second class of NCCC FEMA Corps. This new class is starting in addition to the current NCCC traditional class 19, which is currently serving in projects across the North Central Region.
There are a total of 24 Team Leaders beginning their 11 month journey with FEMA Corps on Monday. Many of them are returning members from FEMA Corps’ inaugural class, which graduated from the Vinton campus on June 13 of this year. The Team Leaders will go through a month long, intensive training period together, in order to prepare them to lead teams of 10 to 12 Corps Members. Corps Members arrive on August 20.
Just like traditional NCCC, FEMA Corps is a team-based, residential program for 18 to 24-year-olds. Unlike the traditional course, however, FEMA Corps members provide logistical and administrative support in the areas of emergency management and long-term recovery activities with FEMA.
FEMA Corps is a new program built from the collaboration with Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). The program only began last year, and is solely dedicated to disaster response and recovery.
