Tristen Sheevey, from Milwaukee, Wis., is a member of Maple 3 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start her 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 3 is made up of 11 people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.
“This program is exactly what I was looking for,” Tristen said, when asked why she joined NCCC. “I want to reach out and be selfless, instead of self-righteous.”
Tristen brings several skills with her to NCCC, which help her be successful throughout her term with the program. She has inter and intra personal skills, and has a year of university education. She is creative, artistic, dedicated, and passionate about her work.
Prior to joining NCCC, Tristen was trying to find her calling in Minneapolis. She attended one year of college at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, studying art. She graduated from Brookfield Central High School in 2011. After finishing the program, Tristen hopes to finish school with a degree in something that she’s passionate about.
Tristen got the chance to be part of a very unique community art project. “My 13 classmates and I painted a picture of a local artist in Milwaukee,” she said. “We blew the paintings up and pasted them on the public outdoor wall. It was really interesting to see how people reacted to these large paintings. In a matter of days, the paintings had graffiti on them. We cleaned up the graffiti.”
Maple 3 is currently working from July 15 to August 2 with Wisconsin Badger Camp in Prairie Du Chien, Wis. The team is assisting the camp with their summer programming through implementation and development of new programming. The camp is especially looking for some music program development.
