Alan Richardson, from Ashedoro, N.C., is a member of Cedar 4 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Cedar 4 is made up of nine people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

“I know this is a good program,” Alan said, when asked why he joined NCCC. “I will be able to help a lot of people.”

Alan brings several skills with him to NCCC, which help him be successful throughout his term with the program. He has received training in basic medical services, carpentry, survival, and urban development. “I am used to camping in the woods for long periods of time and doing training missions, and am always learning new things,” Alan said. He also has experience with computers and working on a team.

Prior to NCCC, Alan was working as a military contractor for over two years. He attended Southwestern Randolph High School. After finishing the program, Alan hopes to do a second year with the AmeriCorps NCCC or join the Peace Corps.

Cedar 4 is currently serving from September 9 to 27 with Benton County Conservation Borad. The team is working to clear trails in Benton County that were damaged by the wind storm in 2011, and building a new trail in Rodger’s Park. They are also revitalizing Tobin’s Cabin.
