Allyson Mignone, from Long Island, N.Y., is a member of Oak 6 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start her 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 6 is made up of seven people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.
When asked why she joined NCCC, Allyson said, “I’m not really sure what I want to do with the rest of my life, but I do know I want to help those who can’t necessarily help themselves.”
Allyson, known to most as Ally, brings several skills with her to NCCC, which help her be successful throughout her term with the program. She was captain of her college lacrosse team and a girl scout for the past 12 years. Those experiences taught her how to work efficiently and effectively with a group of people.
Prior to joining NCCC, Ally had attended State University of New York Potsdam for two years. She graduated from Sachem High School East in 2010. After finishing the program, Ally hopes to finish school and hopefully join the Peace Corps.
Oak 6 is currently serving from August 9 to September 26 with YMCA Metro Detroit in Oscoda, Mich. The team is involved in numerous activities with the camp’s Outdoor Education Program including replacing roofs on cabins, painting the exterior on cabins, removing downed trees along trails and camp property and assisting in camping activities such as the ropes course, climbing wall, and zip line when necessary.
