Et cetera : AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Corps Member Spotlight: Katie Corley

Katie Corley, from Canoga Park, Calif., is a member of Oak 6 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start her 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 6 is made up of seven people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

“I have worked hard all my life with my jobs, mostly working with children, and they really do teach you a lot,” Katie started, when asked why she joined NCCC. “After realizing that they are such dreamers, there wasn't any reason to stop me from trying to achieve my dreams. That's why I'm in Americorps NCCC.”

Katie brings several skills with her to NCCC, which help her be successful throughout her term with the program. She is a hard worker, having had a job since she was 16, and has been volunteering since middle school. She is outgoing and up to any challenge. She is a leader but knows when to follow.

Prior to joining NCCC, Katie was working at a summer camp during the summer and at an after school club during the year. She attended one semeterat Moorpark College, hopinh yo study nursing with a minor in kiniesiology and Bible studies. She graduated from Simi Valley High School in June of 2012. After finishing NCCC, Katie hopes to finish her two years at Moorpark and transfer to a four year university for her bachelor’s degree. After that, she is thinking about going into the Peace Corps before achieving her master’s degree.

Oak 6 is currently serving from October 18 to November 2 with Coggon Area Betterment Association in Coggon, Iowa. The team is assisting with sprucing up the exteriors of organizations in downtown Coggon to make the area more inviting. They are also assisting with repurposing the old school to the new Coggon Center.
