Et cetera : NCCC’s Maple 1: Everyday is a Habitat Day

The AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team Maple 1 recently completed their last NCCC service project with Genesee County Habitat for Humanity (GCHFH) in Flint, Michigan

During their project with GCHFH, which ended November 3, the AmeriCorps NCCC team rehabilitated run down homes, put up siding on new homes, built decks and painted. This work took place on the north side of Flint, which is one of its worst neighborhoods.

The AmeriCorps NCCC team played a big role in making a difference in this area. Through their service, Maple 1 is helping with the Broken Window Effect. This principle states that if a neighborhood looks nice, its residents are more likely to treat it with respect. The work done in these neighborhoods also promotes a reduction in violence in Flint.

Maple 1 learned a lot with their sponsor. They have been taught how to use table saws, circular saws, and a nail gun, amongst many other things. Maple 1 is excited to take these transferable skills with them as they wrap their NCCC year.
