Oak 7, a NCCC team based out of Vinton, Iowa, just finished serving on their last NCCC project with the Flint Housing Commission in Flint, Michigan. The team was in Flint from October 21 to November 1.
The goal for the team while serving the housing commission was to fix up townhouses and prepare them from new families to move in. Families that move into these town houses must be low-income, unemployed or homeless to qualify.
During their first week Oak 7 had almost completed three units for new families to move into. The team mudded, painted, deep cleaned and cleared debris to prepare units for new inhabitants. For their second and last week, the team finished the three units and worked on three more units!
This project was one of the most rewarding for the team because their service was so influential. The team’s service was giving new chances and hope to families. Flint Housing Commission is a “stepping stone” for their tenants by giving them positive and stable homes to have fresh starts!
Flint is a city with rich history, but has suffered from serious economic problems since the fall of the auto industry. General Motors began in Flint, giving many career opportunities for city people, but employment has dropped greatly and the city is suffering. Flint is a priority city for AmeriCorps NCCC and Oak 7 was proud to be serving there.
