For the MLK Day of Service on January 19, FEMA Corps team Spruce 2 from the Vinton Campus volunteered at the Salvation Army soup kitchen and shelter in Jefferson City, Missouri. The Salvation Army provides shelter, meals, and other services for homeless men, women, and families with children in the Jefferson City area.
Members from Spruce 2 cooked and cleaned at the Salvation Army soup kitchen and shelter, as well as served food to dozens from the Jefferson City homeless population. It was an enjoyable way for the team to assist the community in which they have been living and working since January 3. Corps member Jenn Vigue says, “It was great that we were able to serve those who lived at the Salvation Army shelter and we’re definitely planning on doing future events with them.”
Spruce 2 is thrilled to explore more volunteering opportunities in Missouri where they have been deployed by FEMA for the second time. They are currently supporting the FEMA Public Assistance program in the recovery phase from severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred in Missouri during 2013. While in Missouri, Spruce 2 hopes to find a plethora of chances to serve the community that they live in.
