AmeriCorps NCCC team Maple 8 was assisting at Jameson Camp in Indianapolis Indiana. Maple 8 was asked to help with several activities which they are responsible for facilitating for children of all ages.
Maple 8 takes great pride in helping Jameson Camp with the different tasks set before them, which can either have the team serving with children of all ages in environmental education classes, or out in the forest clearing paths of Honey Suckle. Each member in the team was asked to help facilitate an activity each day for the children, who are offered an opportunity to play outside and have them interact with one another in an environment that they may not be familiar with.
“I enjoy working at Jameson Camp because it gives us an opportunity which we have not had before, such as serving with children and removing invasive species. Pretty much gaining new skills that we did not know previous to being here,” says member Iggy of Maple 8.
Jameson Camp began as “fresh air” camp in 1928. Jameson Camp has been working alongside health care workers and Indianapolis leaders to provide children with the opportunity to learn about good nutrition as well as teach them how to overcome behavioral and emotional challenges. Jameson’s one hundred acres of meadows, woods, and streams offer children the ability to experience outdoor recreational opportunities in the midst of the city. They pride themselves in having Camp Tataya Mato, the only residential camp for children affected by HIV/ AIDS.
