Name: Sabrina Hassan
Hometown: Annandale, VA
NCCC Team: Maple 7
Sabrina graduated from Annandale High School in 2010. She considers herself a patient person and she loves working with kids and individuals with disabilities. After graduating high school, she spent the summer volunteering at a local private school tutoring students in Math and English. She also spent time volunteering as an assistant coach for the Special Olympics Basketball team. Sabrina found out about NCCC by doing research and coming across it on the internet. When asked why she chose to do a term of national service, Sabrina said, “I knew I was looking for a program that offered as much financial help as possible. In my search for volunteer services, I came across some great programs; however most of them required the money to be coming out of my own pocket, but NCCC pays for your flight, food, housing etc. It was a great opportunity for me! But I also loved the idea of traveling American and learning so many things hands on. It might just help me figure out what exactly I want to do with my life”. After finishing this year with NCCC Sabrina doesn’t quite know what she is going to do yet, but she likes the idea of a second year of service.
Sabrina and Maple 7 are assisting the Akron Summit Earned Income Tax Credit Program (EITC) with free tax preparation for low-income individuals starting March 17, 2011. The team is assisting the ASCA Inc. by working directly with clients for 35-40 hours per week using computer software to prepare taxes. While learning and practicing tax preparation during this four week project, each Corps Member is being certified as Volunteer Income Tax Assistants (VITA). Further, Corps Members are providing outreach services and education to targeted populations.
