September is National Preparedness Month, and the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management encourages all Iowans to take simple steps now to be ready for emergencies of all kinds.

"Iowans are no strangers to disasters. Each of us plays a vital role in keeping our communities safe and resilient. By understanding the types of emergencies we might face and taking a few key steps, we can protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our neighbors," said John Benson, Director of the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM).

Getting prepared doesn't have to be overwhelming. This month, HSEM will focus on four key steps that can help you feel more secure and confident in the face of a disaster, and will share weekly updates on social media with the following themes:

Week 1: Be Aware. Learn about the emergencies most common in your area and understand the specific risks where you live.

Week 2: Make a Plan. Planning ahead can make all the difference. Figure out how you'll communicate with your family and where you'll go if you need to evacuate.

Week 3: Build a Kit. An emergency kit with 3-7 days of essentials—such as food, water, and first-aid supplies—will help your household stay safe and comfortable when access to everyday services is disrupted.

Week 4: Get Involved. Want to do more? Consider taking a class in CPR or first aid, or find out about volunteer opportunities in your community.
