Vinton Today - A Blast From The Past

Taken from an old copy of the old, Vinton Eagle semi-Weekly, Tuesday morning, January 10th, 1905. The old blacksmith shop, which I believe, was just north of the post office. I remember the building being there when I was very small, in about 1946/7.

This photo looks to be the west end of the Hummel apartment building. <br /> <br /> This view would be if you were standing across 5th Street by Barnes Furniture and looking south. The telephone pole would be in the alley between Hummel Apts. and the Times building.

GHK October 26, 2011, 4:40 pm The Hummel apartments were once the locker plant run by the Mann family. Not sure this is it but suppose it could be.

DS October 26, 2011, 12:39 pm John, look closely at the picture, in the far left edge. There is a church steeple in the background. If this building was just north of the current Post Office, I am not sure that you could see a steeple in the background at this angle. I did some research thinking the steeple was the Methodist Church by the library. However, the current steeple does not have the clock or peaked roof but the church always chimes the hour like it used to have a clock. Also, that cornice looks familiar. I believe that this building still exists and it is the current Hummel Apartments just east of the Cedar Valley Times that lost a portion of the roof in the storm. The angles are right and so are the shapes of the building. There is a great picture on the Vinton Unlimited website (photo 25 of 28) that shows the damages, the building shapes and the possible angles shown in the old picture. This was fun. Keep the old pictures coming.
