Name: Tim Brown
Hometown: Springfield, Mass.
Tim is serving as a member of the AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 3 at the Vinton Campus. He learned about NCCC from his cousin who served with the program following Hurricane Katrina. Tim chose to participate in NCCC FEMA Corps because he wanted to take direct action to help people. He says that he has always wanted to join AmeriCorps and this was the right time in his life to do it.
Tim graduated from Springfield Central High School in 2006 and Syracuse University in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He isn’t certain yet what he wants to do after his service term ends. He is considering returning to college or working in either the healthcare field or as a labor organizer.
Tim’s hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts was hit by a tornado over a year ago. The damage was extensive and today Main Street is still a row of boarded up buildings and rubble at one end. FEMA came in to assist with the disaster recovery process and Tim says that their initial response was great and made him realize that he’d like to help with that sort of work in other communities through FEMA Corps.
