Name: Julie Hankins

Hometown: Linthicum Heights, Md.

Julie is serving as a member of the NCCC-FEMA Corps team Pine 4 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC-FEMA Corps because she believes that helping others and serving a greater cause are the most fulfilling and honorable things a person can do.

Julie graduated from North County High School in 2006 and Anne Arundel Community College where she received her Associates of Applied Science degree in law enforcement and criminal justice. After her service term ends she wants to continue serving her community and would also like to attend graduate school for social work.

Prior to joining NCCC-FEMA Corps Julie served as a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member in her community. One time she was working in a shelter for displaced people during a hurricane when she was approached by a man with an Implanted Vascular Access Device that needed to be plugged in to a power source to keep his heart working. He said that he had lost power in his apartment and the shelter so Julie made sure to move him to the generator. She says that this experience was eye-opening and made her realize the importance of disaster relief work.
