Megan Minnis of Oak Park, Ill., is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Spruce 6 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she is passionate about helping others and wanted to make a difference and travel before jumping into the workaday world.
Megan graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School in 2007 and Southern Illinois University in 2011 with a degree in elementary education. After her service term ends she hopes to either find a job as an elementary school teacher or serve with the Camp Adventure program.
Service is a big part of Megan’s life. She was active in the Circle K International service organization and Habitat for Humanity in college, which sparked her interest in national service. Prior to joining NCCC FEMA Corps she was substitute teaching and working as a reading and writing teacher at a summer camp for children with special needs in Ely, Minnesota.
Megan and her team are currently serving on their final project in Washington, D.C. after spending the last two rounds in New Jersey working on the Hurricane Sandy response with FEMA. The team returns to Vinton in June for graduation.
