Novastarr Nelson, from San Diego, Cali., is a member of Oak 3 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start her 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 3 is made up of 10 people from across the country, and they will serve together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region.
“I see AmeriCorps NCCC as a way to travel to areas I've never been before, help with my student loans, and assist those in need while I do it,” Novastarr said.
Novastarr brings a lot of skills with her to NCCC, which will help throughout her term with the program. She has experience in the areas of graphic design, basic art, and computer technology.
Prior to joining NCCC, Novastarr was working as a freelance graphic designer. She graduated from Lane Community College in 2012 with an associate’s degree in graphic design. She also graduated from Creswell High School in 2008. Novastarr has no definite plans after NCCC. “I have options and I'm not in any rush to choose just yet,” she said.
Oak 3’s current project runs from May 3 to June 24 with Lutheran Disaster Response in Minot, N.D. The team is conducting flood recovery work such as delivering materials, warehouse inventory and sanitizing and rebuilding homes in response to more than 4,000 homes being affected after the worst flood in the city’s history hit in June 2011.
