Greg Carlson of Bainbridge Island, Washington, is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Spruce 3 at the Vinton Campus. He chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because he wanted to spend some time serving his nation and giving back to the community. He says, “I have always had a fairly easy life and want[ed] to show my appreciation through service.”
Greg graduated from Bainbridge Island High School in 2006 and Washington State University in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture. After his service term ends he hopes to serve with the AmeriCorps Watershed Stewards Project program in California.
Prior to joining NCCC FEMA Corps, Greg spent seven months in New Zealand with the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) organization. WWOOF links individuals eager to learn about organic farming with farms willing to teaching organic agricultural practices. Over those seven months Greg gained valuable experiences that changed his perspective on the benefits of volunteer work. He says, “This experience has proven to me that volunteering is the best way to get involved with things you otherwise might not have the chance to do.”
Greg and his team wrapped up their final project in Portsmouth, N.H. after spending the last two rounds in New Jersey working on the Hurricane Sandy response with FEMA. They returned to Vinton in June and graduate from the program on June 13.
