The Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP), along with the U.S. Attorneys from the Northern and Southern Districts, announced today it is accepting applications for the State’s portion of the federal Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program. An estimated $127,228 in funding will be available to communities in the Northern U.S. Attorney District and $175,177 to communities in the Southern U.S. Attorney District.

The PSN grant program is designed to address violent crime with an emphasis on gun and gang related crime. The U.S. Attorneys have identified the following priorities for their districts:

Iowa Southern District

• Violent crime project or program that has the longest-term effect.

• Violent crime project or program that focuses upon a specific geographical location that has demonstrated an extraordinary amount of gun violence in comparison to the rest of the district.

• Violent crime project or program that has the greatest geographical effect. (beneficial for multiple law enforcement jurisdictions).

• Project or programs which provide effective violent crime prevention.

Iowa Northern District

• Community based violent crime prevention and deterrence projects.

• Violent crime research partnership which identify specific violent crime problems, inform evidence based responses, and measure progress.

• Violent crime enforcement projects.

Local and State units of government, including Indian tribes, are eligible to apply to ODCP for JAG and RSAT grants. Faith based and non-profit organizations are also eligible to apply, in collaboration with government agencies.

Competitive applications will be submitted through Iowa’s Grant Management system at www.iowagrants.gov and are due June 25th. Funding is expected to be available to successful applicants by October 1st.
