On May 6th, Oak 5 traveled to Adrian, Michigan to begin their project of helping build houses with Habitat for Humanity of Lenawee County.
The team has been finishing up their first house, where they laid down flooring and also put up dry wall on both the sides of walls and ceilings. In addition, Oak 5 helped build a fence and beautify the landscaping of housing with other volunteers from the community. The team has been able to see all the hard work it takes to build a house and what needs to be done to complete a build. They had the privilege of not only working with the staff of Habitat, but also the students of the local high school.
“Ever since joining AmeriCorps NCCC, building house for those in need was one opportunity I was really hoping to experience. We feel very lucky to be working with Habitat for Humanity doing this while also helping local communities at the same time,” shares Oak 5 member Courtney Kessinger.
While in Adrian, the team has also been able to participate in volunteer opportunities apart from their daily work with Habitat for Humanity. Oak 5 had the opportunity to help with a run hosted by Open Grown School in Tipton, Michigan. The team had a lot of fun meeting additional members of the community and helping ensure the run went smoothly.
Habitat for Humanity operates in local communities across the United States and over 70 different countries in order to work towards a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat builds strength, stability, and self-reliance in their partnerships with families in need by helping them build their homes, with the assistance of volunteers, allowing these families to pay a mortgage that is affordable.
