Name: Andrew Culvert
Hometown: Guilford, CT
NCCC Team: Cedar 4
Andrew graduated from Guilford High School located in Guilford, Connecticut in 2009. During high school, Andrew was involved in mission trips where he enjoyed learning new skills with every trip he participated in. He learned about NCCC through a friend and immediately became interested in serving with the organization.
When asked why he chose to do a term of national service, Andrew answered, “It helps me benefit a community without having to leave from an unfinished project. I would rather benefit the community by being able to stay on a site for longer than one week”. After finishing this year with NCCC, Andrew plans on finishing his Psychology degree and getting a part time job while going to school. He may also complete another year with NCCC.
Andrew has had a few unique experiences before coming to NCCC. One experience was going to Canada for a 600 kilometer excursion into the Tomagami area with no communication or any means of contact on a Canoe trip. The trip was a three week long survival trip and was extremely enjoyable. He has also been to Korea funded by Sejong Intl, a camp based around finding out about your Korean side for adopted Korean children.
Andrew and his team, Cedar 4, are serving with Flint Housing Project Commission in Flint, Michigan for their first NCCC service project. Cedar 4 is serving in Flint from March 18 – April 29, 2011. The NCCC team is working inside a section-eight housing development to restore the home units for further use. Restoration includes painting, cleaning and reconstruction of decaying structures. Section eight provides affordable housing for individuals and families with low-income. Besides working on this type of housing, Cedar 4 also has the opportunity to work independently on projects with non-profit organizations around Flint.
