Since September 27th AmeriCorps NCCC team Oak 4 has been getting down and dirty in South Dakota while mucking out the long flooded homes of Pierre-Fort Pierre area.
After unprecedented flooding in May, the area was left flooded for four months before the affected homes could begin to be salvaged. Oak four is the first of four NCCC teams to partner with Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota to muck out the soggy, moldy homes.
This is the teams’ first disaster relief project. NCCC Member Dana Fytelson says “We’ve been hoping for the opportunity to assist in disaster relief service area and we’re really excited to help out South Dakota.”
Over the course of their six week stay three more teams are joining Oak 4 in the effort to get families back into their homes. In total, 32 members and team leaders will be assigned to the project.
Oak 4 and their partner teams are in South Dakota until November 7th.
