Name: Phil Schaefer
Team: Maple 4
Hometown: Saint Louis, MO
Phil joined NCCC to do his civic duty and help people. “I love to travel and wanted an experience unlike any other that was available to me” states Phil. He says he now has a better understanding of not just how he is different from other people, but more about how they are the same.
Phil says “I can survive on $4.50 a day for food” as one of the biggest things he has learned this year.
Phil has served on a total of four projects this year: trail building in Cincinnati, OH; assisting Parks and Recreation in Vinton, IA; rehabilitation work in Marquette, MI; and assisting with flood relief in Minot, ND.
Phil is currently in Minot, ND working with Lutheran Disaster Response to sanitize and winter-proof homes that were damaged in the flooding this past summer. “I loved working with the YMCA of Marquette County in Marquette, Michigan. The project sponsor and staff were absolutely wonderful and accommodating. Marquette is the most beautiful place I have ever seen” says Phil on his favorite project.
After completing his NCCC year in November he plans on going to Mount Rushmore then home to plan and save for a wedding with his fiancé. After that he wants to take steps to become a park ranger.
