AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team Oak One joined Oak Four and has spent three weeks in Pierre, South Dakota mucking and gutting homes.
In May, Pierre, the state capitol, was flooded from the rain water and snow caps in Montana. Lutheran Social Services, the organization the teams are working with, requested four teams to help the communities of Pierre and Fort Pierre. Oak Six recently arrived and Cedar Four is coming next week. So far, the teams have completed nearly 17 homes. "Completed" means the teams have removed all the dry wall, flooring, insulation, and sometimes even the ceiling.
Once the home is down to the studs, it will be scrubbed down and cleaned with bleach to kill the mold. The home owners, along with the whole community are very appreciative for the work the teams have been doing and say that it is inspiring. The NCCC teams are working in Pierre until November 7th.
