NCCC’s Oak Seven Serves on Last Project in Iowa.
By: Oak 7
Oak Seven finishes up last service project with AmeriCorps NCCC at the Nahant Marsh in Davenport, Iowa on November 8, 2011. The team’s last project is to help refurbish a 120 year old farm house into a new field station. In addition to the field house, the team is removing invasive species, cleaning up flood debris and assisting in ongoing field research projects.
Each day at the marsh serves as an opportunity for a new project. The first day the team spent the morning using chain saws to remove invasive trees in order to clear space for a field station parking lot. By the afternoon team members were cutting up the fallen trees into free firewood for the local community. The marsh works to promote ecologically friendly practices in much of what they do. Another day at the marsh was spent cleaning up flood debris from a spring flood. By the afternoon the team had pulled 26 tires, one bathtub and six bags of trash. The team was surprised what they were able to accomplish in just one afternoon.
The team is learning a great deal about the environment from this project. Most of the site supervisors are highly educated in the fields of biology and ecology. The team will have the opportunity to sit on an environmental class taught by one of the Nahant Marsh employees. Furthermore, the team will be able to assist with ongoing field research projects happening at the Marsh. The team could not be more excited about spending their last project at such a great place.
