Events and Activities : VPRD plans kids triathlon; cardboard boat race, coed softball league

VPRD has some upcoming events that give you opportunity to stay active during this long, hot stretch of summer! On the morning of Saturday, July 27th, VPRD will be hosting its 4th annual 'Kids Triathlon.' The race is divided out by age divisions and gender. The 7-8 year olds will do a 50 meter swim, 1.2 mile bike ride, and a 0.6 mile run. 9-10 year olds will complete a 100 meter swim, 1.8 mile bike ride and a 1.2 mile run. 11-12, and 13-14 year old divisions will complete a 200 meter swim, a 3.6 mile bike ride, and a 1.2 mile run. The cost of this race is $10 and participants must register for the race by July 19 to avoid incurring a late penalty. The race will get underway at 8 AM and will take place in the area surrounding the Vinton Recreation Center. Later in the day on Saturday, July 27th, VPRD will be hosting its Cardboard Boat Races at the Vinton Community Swimming Pool. Boats must be made entirely out of cardboard and duct tape and is eligible to compete in one of the following race categories: 13 & Under (single-person boat), 14 & up (single person boat), and the Doubles Competition (two person boat - all ages welcome!). There is no cost to enter your boat into the competition and boat drivers also get into the pool for free! Registration of your boat will take place from 6 PM - 6:45 PM on the day of the race and the competitions will begin at 7 PM. There will be prizes awarded for overall race winners along with some other fun race categories! Please pick up a registration form for rules. VPRD's Coed Softball League is now accepting team registrations and league play will tentatively begin on Sunday, August 11th. Games will be played on Sunday afternoons and early evenings. If you are interested in getting a team together for this fall league, please submit your team registration and $30 deposit by Friday, August 2nd. Team fees and format of the league will be determined based on the number of teams registered.
