Vinton – Approximately 270 Benton County Third Grade students and their teachers, will converge on the Benton County Fairgrounds in Vinton, Wednesday, April 28th from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30p.m. for a day on "the farm". Iowa State University Extension and Benton County Farm Bureau in conjunction with the Benton County livestock and crop commodity groups and the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA will host the Third Grade students for the day, providing them information how agriculture affects their daily lives. Greg Walston, Benton County Extension, Ag Day Committee member, and Ag Day supporter, states "The Ag Field Day is a great activity for the youth of BentonCounty. Many students no longer live on a farm, yet agriculture is vitally important to BentonCounty’s economy. We hope to give students a chance to learn a little about agriculture first hand and share with them the importance of agriculture in their community.” During their time "on the farm", the 3rd graders will learn about pork, dairy, sheep, beef production, corn and soybeans; horses; poultry/rabbit and farm safety/equipment.
