Pasture improvement and rotational grazing are key topics for many beef and dairy producers, but one of the big challenges becomes subdivision, fencing, and watering systems. These topics will be discussed at a pasture walk at the farm of Tom & Connie Soppe on Wednesday, June 6, at 6:00 pm.
The Soppes have established an intensive rotational grazing system for beef cows in northwest Buchanan County. They have approximately one acre paddocks and move cows daily. A variety of grass species have been seeded or interseeded over the years to improve forage quality. They also have an above ground pipeline watering system to provide water to every paddock.
Roger Erickson from NRCS will also be on hand to discuss cost share programs to assist in pasture improvement. The Soppe pasture is located at 1154 175thSt, Jesup. From Jesup, go north on County Rd V62 about 3.5 miles to County Rd D16 (175th St), then turn east on 175th St and go 0.6 miles to the farm.
Pasture walks are informal educational programs designed to demonstrate one or two key areas of pasture management, as well as answer any questions you might have. Each has a slightly different focus and producers are invited to attend any that are of interest to improving their own pasture management.
All producers who are dependent on forage production are invited to attend. If you have questions, or need detailed directions to the farm location, contact Denise Schwab in the Benton County Extension office at 319-472-4739.
