NEWW met at the Luther Home conference house on January 5th. Everyone told what the best part of Christmas break was for them. We discussed the different service projects that we have been doing. We delivered Christmas gifts to 82 Lutheran Home residents and sang Christmas carols in December. We have shipped 4 large boxes of stuffed animals to soldiers overseas so they can distribute and build relationships with the families where they are located. We are continuing to collect stuffed animals so if anyone has any they would like to donate, please contact Melissa. Since our December meeting was postponed due to weather, we have postponed presentations to February and March. Everyone should have a month and ideas on topics to give Melissa; an email was sent regarding this.
New business that was discussed includes: make sure that you are reading the Monday Minutes that are sent out via email. If you aren’t getting them please contact the Extension office. The bowling tournament is February 16th at Berry Lanes in Vinton. Those that want to participate need to contact Melissa to sign up by January 31st. There is a Senior Service Trip scheduled for February 22nd to go to Des Moines and help others. They are doing a can drive as their fundraiser to help pay for the trip. If you have returnable cans or bottles that you want to donate you can contact Lauren Tandy or the Extension office.
A new service project that we would like to work on is sending boxes to soldiers in Afghanistan. Tess has a cousin that is serving there and there are 150 people in their unit with 30 to 40 in each shed. We would like to collect snacks (protein bars, fruit snacks and homemade goodies) to send to these groups. Melissa suggested getting together and baking items to send. She will send out an email regarding this activity.
Our next meeting is on February 2nd at the Lutheran Home Office. Since it is Super Bowl Sunday our meeting will start at 3:00pm so everyone can get home for the game.
