In 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt founded the CCC to help fight the Great Depression and the urgent need to employ young men. Nationwide, more than 2.5 million men enrolled in the Corps. Iowa had more than 46,000 enrolled when the program discontinued at the start of U.S. involvement in World War II.
In Iowa, most people know about the work done in our state parks. But over 75% of the work projects dealt with soil erosion, flood and drought prevention, and planting trees. There was a soil erosion camp at Belle Plaine. Author Linda McCann has spoken with nineteen men who were in the CCC and shares their memories. Her book will be available for sale and can be autographed.
