Whether its diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, cancer or any other chronic disease, patients suffering from chronic conditions (and their families) face a number of common challenges.

It could be fatigue, confusion on treatment, stress or other related symptoms; all additional complexities that come with an already-difficult health condition. That's why Mercy has partnered with the Heritage Area Agency on Aging to offer the Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshop.

Frieda Davis of Vinton is teaching the class.

"I saw the advertisement for the training class some time ago, like last year, and thought that would be something that our community could benefit from," says Frieda. "After scheduling  problems it finally was held this last fall but I took the class with the understanding that I would teach it in Benton County, particularly the Vinton area."
Another person from Vinton signed up to take the teaching class so Davis went forward with the training. "Being a professional nurse by occupation and the last  years as a Parish Nurse, I find that many people have chronic diseases and need some rather practical but verified help in managing their general problems," says Frieda. "So this is a great opportunity for our elderly and not-so-elderly as well as caregivers to learn some self-management skills."

About four years ago, Frieda taught a class in the community sponsored by Heritage Area agency on aging about "Mater of Balance: Managing concerns about Falls" which was well received.
