Smaller items that will fit in 4x4 foot cardboard cartons will be accepted throughout the day on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Larger items, like household appliances, will be accepted only on Saturday. Elderly and handicapped donors who have no way to transport their scrap can call fundraising chair Rick Ohrt at 472-4813 to request curbside pickup. Questions about acceptable items may also be directed to Rick.
Donated scrap will be crushed and/or recycled by A-line Metals and Iron of Waterloo, with proceeds going to the Vinton Lions for their many projects, including local causes such as Celebration Park: Reach Out and Read at Virginia Gay Clinic: the new Benton County Nature Center: the Palace Theater seating project; school programs, college scholarships and Viking Athletic Boosters; Boy Scouting; Veterans Honor Flight, and Kids Sight vision testing equipment for area preschoolers; and helping those in need obtain eye glasses and hearing aides. On a regional and national level, they have supported causes including Diabetes Awareness, the Cancer Walk, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Iowa Lions Foundation and national Lions programs.Pictured above, Vinton Lions Rick Ohrt (at left) and Rob Levis prepare for the Lions’ May 10 scrap metal fundraiser. They are standing next to one of the 4x4-foot cartons that will hold smaller discards, like the bent trash can Ohrt is holding. Levis’s computer tower is also acceptable scrap, however the commercial partner in this fundraiser, A-line Metals and Iron, will not accept CRT monitors or older TVs with picture tubes. Larger items, like appliances, are also welcomed.
