The Center Point Historical Society has three happenings happening this month.
Sunday Aug. 14 Jim and Loretta Jones will give an informal presentation called “Talking About Tombstones.” This light look at a heavy subject will be at 2 p.m. at the Depot Museum. Admission is free.
The next Sunday, Aug. 21, will be the annual Heirloom Tomato Tasting Party to benefit the Historical Society. It will be at 2 p.m. in Dennis and Linda Schlicht’s garden at 1108 First Avenue in Center Point. This fun fundraising event is sponsored by the Schlicts and by Bob and Marilyn King of Center Point, fellow old-fashioned tomato enthusiasts.
At last year’s event, in spite of a cold wet summer there were 36 varieties of tomatoes to sample and vote on. The top four average vote getters were, in order: Striped German, Brandywine, Orange Cherry and Golden Bear. A hybrid or two was included in the samples last year and “Better Boy was Bottom Boy” in the balloting, Bob King said.
This year’s extreme heat and humidity are also challenging for tomatoes. Come Sunday the 21st and see which of the oldies but goodies stood the test.
On the last Sunday of August, the 28th, bring your family history papers, photos, newspaper clippings, etc. to the Depot Museum at 2 p.m. for a mylaring preservation workshop. Mylar is an archival plastic-like material with which to incapsulate papers to preserve them. Unlike lamination the papers can be cut out of the mylar envelopes if necessary without damage.
The workshop is free but donations for materials will be accepted.
Admission to the Depot Museum, open from 1 to 4 every Sunday through mid October, is free.
For information on any of these events call 849-1792.
The Historical Society’s regular business meeting will be Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Depot Musuem.
