Minutes of the Regular Meeting
Board of Directors
Vinton-Shellsburg Community Schools
October 12, 2015
Call to Order
President Sue Gates called the regular meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. at the Vinton-Shellsburg Administrative Office.
Roll Call / Pledge of Allegiance
Sue Gates, Jason Hicok, Brenda Bartz, Kyle Schminke, Mike Timmermans,
Kathy Van Steenhuyse, Mary Jo Hainstock, Superintendent, and Karrie Bartling/Acting Secretary
were present.
Audience Comments
There were no comments from the audience at this time.
Administrators Reports
Keith McGowan shared a map he created outlining each of the school bus routes.
Principals gave updates about activities and work in their buildings.
Superintendent’s Reports
Superintendent Hainstock reported on enrollment, open enrollment requests, calendar, school board convention, November board agenda, and the recent incidents concerning freedom of speech
and maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment.
Board Reports/Requests
Kathy Van Steenhuyse reported on being a part of a social studies’ class museum walk on their work from the Cold War.
Sue Gates reported on attending one of the governor’s roundtables at UNI and the emphasis on collaboration between schools, industries, and post-secondary institutions.
Rob Levis thanked the administration and teachers involved with the flag incident for keeping things focused on learning and moving forward.
General Business of the Board
Consent Items
512. It was moved by Levis and seconded by Bartz to accept the consent items as presented. Motion
carried 7/0.
HVAC Projects
The board reviewed the preliminary work on the replacement of the dual decks at Tilford and would
like to pursue other options as discussed. The consensus of the board was to have a system review done with
Middle School heating.
Physical Plant and Equipment Levy/Schoolhouse Fund
513. It was moved by Levis and seconded by Bartz to approve the recommendations for expenditures
within the PPEL/Schoolhouse Fund. Motion carried 7/0.
Childcare Service at Shellsburg
513. It was moved by Bartz and seconded by Timmermans to discontinue working with Kids Inc. at
Shellsburg. Motion carried 7/0.
514. It was moved by Bartz and seconded by VanSteenhuyse to approve the contract with Creative Kids
Company LLC to provide childcare services at Shellsburg starting October 19th, 2015. Motion carried 7/0.
School Finance
Superintendent Hainstock shared a presentation with the board on the basics of school finance to help
them understand the budget.
